Frequently Asked Questions

TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services runs this program and determines eligibility.

Families who qualify for TANF may receive a monthly cash benefit, as well as help with child care, transportation or other things they need to become employed and ultimately economically sustainable.

Activities that may be part of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program include: 
  • Work experience
